Blessings invoked on President and country

The Jaya Pirith Chanting with the participation of 3,000 Buddhist monks representing all districts in the
country was held at the BMICH to invoke blessings on the President and the country for the fourth
time in succession. This pirith chanting ceremony is organized by the Defence Ministry.

The Water Supply and Drainage Ministry on a directive from Water Supply and Drainage Minister 
Dinesh Gunawardana has decided to slash water bills of every temple which has been supplied 
water by the Water Board by 75 percent, to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi during May.

BID TO END SL WORKERS’ STRIKE IN JORDAN

Negotiations to bring back 15 jailed workers:
The two week long strike by over 1,500 Sri Lankan apparel workers in Jordan demanding higher
wages, is close to an amicable settlement as the majority of the protesting employees have
expressed their willingness to resume work, authorities said yesterday.

Bar Assn passes resolution against Darusman Report

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) at a special meeting on Saturday at 
Hultsdorp adopted a resolution directing UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon not
to take any step directly or indirectly to implement the recommendations of the Panel
 Report which is ‘biased and prejudicial’ against Sri Lanka.

Pardon for prisoners

The Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Ministry is planning to release a large number of prisoners to mark the 2600th Sambuddhathva Jayanthi. Prisoners serving short prison terms for minor offences, those unable to pay small fines and those who have conducted themselves in an exemplary manner during their prison term, are to be considered for the general pardon.      Full Story

Finish construction by August, directs President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday directed officials to complete the
construction of the Southern Expressway by August. He stressed the importance
of having an arrangement through which the Southern Expressway can be opened
